š Kal Freightās Bankruptcy Unveils Massive Fraud Scandal. Kal Freight Inc., a California-based trucking firm employing 600 drivers, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, revealing staggering allegations of fraud and asset mismanagement. Daimler Truck Financial Services claims Kal Freight fabricated titles for non-existent trailers, securing $16.8 million, and illegally transferred collateral worth $20 million to affiliates in Canada. Further, trucks and trailers were sold or leased under dubious transactions, risking $40+ million in creditor losses. To salvage operations, Kal Freight ousted its founder and appointed independent directors alongside a chief restructuring officer. Creditors and industry insiders now await resolution of this tangled web of deception and debt.
š Jason Millerās Dry Van Outlook for 2025. According to Jason Miller, the dry van truckload sector is poised for growth in H1 2025, driven by lower interest rates, a business-friendly climate following President Trumpās reelection, and strong residential construction activity. Freight demand is projected to rise, with a 2% YoY increase in the trucking ton-mile index by mid-2025. While gains wonāt match previous highs due to stagnant oil and gas drilling, machinery and motor vehicles also promise robust freight volumes. Rates are expected to climb, with the sector's PPI forecasted to grow 4% by mid-year. However, potential risks like poor tariff policies or a port strike could dampen momentum, though Miller feels the demands will outweigh the negatives.
š© Trucking Owner Guilty of Emissions Tampering, COVID Loan Fraud. Pavel Ivanovich Turlak, owner of several Spokane, WA trucking companies, pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Clean Air Act and fraudulently obtaining over $300,000 in COVID-19 relief funds. From 2017-2023, Turlak bought illegal ādelete tuneā files to disable pollution controls on his trucks and those of customers. Authorities found Turlak ineligible for relief funds due to his environmental violations but noted he falsely certified eligibility. āFamilies in Eastern Washington deserve to breathe cleaner air,ā said US Attorney Waldref, āWe will continue to ensure a healthy, high quality of life and keep our region safe and strong.ā
